Charles L. Ring Sr.

LINCOLN - Charles L. Ring Sr., 91, husband of the late Eunice (Bowden) Ring, went to be with his Lord, Feb. 23, 2013, in Bangor. Charles was born Feb. 8, 1922, in Bangor, the son of Lawrence and Ella (Wood) Ring.

Born the first of four children, he grew up in Orrington, sharing many adventures with two brothers and one sister and pals despite the fact that the Depression years existed. Charles was well-liked by all. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving his country with honor during World War II in the Pacific Theater in Hawaii. After leaving the service he worked for Eastern Fine Paper in Brewer, and Getchell Bros., before eventually becoming a game warden in Richmond. In 1953, Charlie moved his family to Orrington and went to work for Coles Express in Bangor. He was a union steward for many years at Coles, saving many men their jobs and recovering lost wages for them. Charlie always fought for getting the teamsters a fair shake. He worked at Coles until he retired in 1986 and what a retirement he had. Charlie had a lot of fun wherever he went. He worked hard and he played hard, following the advise of his father, given during the Depression years, "You find a job, you work hard at it!" and that he did, whether working on the family farm or roller-skating in the many pavilions with his best friend, Johnny Dunton. Charlie spent his winters traveling around the US, and his summers at Elsmore Landing in Grand Lake Stream. During his life he was a member of the Grange, the American Legion and a commander of VFW Post No. 4527, Orrington. He loved to hunt, fish and go camping with his buddies and their wives. Charlie loved boating, hiking, three-wheeling and ice fishing no matter how cold it got. He was active up into his 90's and his mind was a sharp as a tack. He was devoted to all his family and friends all over the United States. Charlie loved life and lived it to the fullest right up to the end.

Along with his wife, Eunice; Charlie was predeceased by his brothers, Lawrence and Frank; and his sister, Rosella. Surviving are his four children, Charles Jr. and his wife, Esther, of Lincoln, Diane Drew and her husband, Eugene Pellon, of Texas, Robin Smith and her husband, Dana, of Hampden, Jo Jo DeMartina and her husband, Matthew Webber, of Florida; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. Charlie was a born again Christian who loved his Lord with all his heart. His family and many, many friends will miss him, but he is now in the presence of the Lord, reunited with his loving wife, Eunice.

Charlie requested a graveside service at Marston Cemetery, Orrington. A celebration of his life with family and friends will be held after. We will honor his request in the spring. Those wishing to remember Charlie in a special way may contribute in his memory to Maurice W. Miles VFW Post No. 4527, care of Christopher Robinson, Commander, 15 E. Bucksport Road, Orrington, ME 04474. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
