Carroll G. Frye

EDDINGTON - Carroll G. Frye, 89, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at his residence. He was born April 11, 1924, in Bradley, the son of Bernard and Florence (Penney) Frye.

Carroll grew up in Bradley and graduated from Old Town High School. He studied propeller mechanics in Houlton, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served from 1943 until 1945. He flew over Europe as a gunner for the planes that delivered fuel to Patton's Armored Division. Upon his return home, Carroll married his childhood sweetheart, Thelma Spruce. Carroll worked as a salesman for Grand Union Tea Company, as a weaver for Old Town Woolen Mill, sold insurance for Met Life and New York Life and then was employed by Bangor Mental Health as a boiler engineer for many years. Carroll's faith was very important to him and he was a past member of the Bradley Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, the choir director and the Sunday school superintendent. In 1972 Carroll and Thelma moved to Eddington and joined the Clifton Baptist where he assumed the same responsibilities. Carroll was civic minded and spent numerous hours volunteering. He was president of the Viola Rand School PTA, directed the Bradley teen center, and was both Cub Master and District Commissioner for scouting. Later in his life he volunteered his time at the Coles Museum where he enjoyed talking with adolescents about his experiences during World War II.

He is survived by two sons, Curtis Frye and wife, Karen, of Holden, and Daryl Frye and wife, Connie, of Eddington; four grandchildren, Brett and Justin Frye, John Bellen and B.J. Frye; three great-grandchildren, Zackary Bellen, Mackenzie Bellen, and Mariah Frye; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Thelma L. Frye.

A memorial service for Carroll and Thelma will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Clifton Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Clifton Baptist Church, 742 Airline Road, Clifton, ME 04428. A service of Memorial Alternatives, 205 Center St., Bangor.
