 VEAZIE - Vilora A. "Sally" Jones, 85, wife of the late Freeland Jones for 58 years, died May 18, 2013. She was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Millinocket, daughter of Edward J. and Florence T. (Carr) LaPlante. Vilora was proud to be a Maine group greeter for more than 20 years. She was a leader in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts for more than 10 years. Vilora was a member of the Parent-Teacher Association, served on the Veazie school board and was active in the town affairs. She a past matron of the order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Mccobb's Militia Company 18th Century Reenactment Company. Vilora was formerly active in All Souls Congregational Church and Veazie Congregational Church. In addition to her parents and husband, Freeland, Vilora was predeceased by two brothers, Bryant LaPlante and John "Dick" Laplante; and grandson, Richard Lawrence. Vilora is survived by five children, Karen L. Walker, Richard B. Jones, Timothy T. Jones, Steven W. Jones and Peter A. Jones; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert LaPlante; and several nephews and a niece. At her request there will be no services.  CASWELL - Joan J. King, 63, died unexpectedly May 18, 2013, at her home. She was born Nov. 2, 1949, in Van Buren, daughter of Percy and Theresa (Chamberlain) Berube. She worked at Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Caribou, for more than 25 years. Joan was a devoted member of St. Joseph Church, Hamlin, and was a former Eucharistic Minister and religious education coordinator. She is survived by her mother, Theresa Berube of Van Buren; two sons, Roger and wife, Lori, of Hancock and Scott and wife, Stephanie, of Limestone; daughter, Gail Cyr and husband, Steven, of Hampden; four sisters, Elaine Cote and husband, Larry, of Caswell, Diane Deeves and husband, Robert, of Hamlin, Lorraine Powers and husband, Albert, of Limestone and Blanche Street and husband, Barry, of Nebraska; two brothers, Michael Berube of Limestone and Percy Berube Jr. and wife, Doreen, of Van Buren; and four grandchildren, Kyle, Casey, Rebecca and Marcus. She was predeceased by her husband Roger W. King Sr.; father, Percy Berube Sr.; brother, Roger Berube; and her long time companion, Sheldon Lyons.  PALMYRA - Joan Kurro passed away peacefully May 19, 2013, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 22, 1930, in New York City, to James and Eleanor (McGrath) Welsh. Joan graduated from Aquinas High School in 1949 and began working for Metropolitan Life Insurance, New York City, where she was active in their theater group. In 1952, Joan answered an urgent recruiting call and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where she later met and married John Kurro Jr. Joan was co-owner of Gateway Restaurant, 1972-1991. She was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Pittsfield. After retirement, she became active with Meals for ME, Newport. She was an avid bowler and stayed active in the lives of her grandchildren and all who knew her as "Nana." She was predeceased by her parents; husband, John; and brother, James. She is survived by brother, Thomas Welsh and Cathy Grande of Central Islip, N.Y.; three daughters, Lynda and husband, Robert Woloss, of York Harbor, Kristine Kurro of Portland and Carolyn Kurro of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, Dylan Andrews of Quincy, Mass., Dana Andrews of Groveland, Calif., and Otto Shorey of Portland. She is also survived by beloved nephew, Alan Kurro of Springfield, Mass., and his three children, Hope Jacobson of Scarborough, Eian Kurro of Syracuse, N.Y., and Liza Witonis of Dover, N.H.; as well as nieces, Debra Welsh of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sue Welsh of Mesa, Ariz.; and nephew, Kenneth Welsh of Hackettstown, N.J.  VAN BUREN - Melvin E. Madore, 79, died May 19, 2013, at a Caribou hospital. He was born March 19, 1934, in Van Buren, son of Leo and Lillian (Ayotte) Madore. He graduated from Van Buren Boys High School in 1952. He worked with former Beaulieu Dry Cleaners and owned Lebrun and Madore Cleaners for many years. He also worked at former Van Buren Community Hospital and St. John Valley Health Center for many years as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement. He served the town of Van Buren as a prior constable and volunteer firefighter. He also served two separate terms on the Van Buren town council. A veteran of the Korean War, Melvin was a member and past commander of American Legion, Post 49, Van Buren. He was a member and past grand knight of Knights of Columbus, Council 1635 and member and past faithful navigator of the 4th Degree Assembly, Van Buren. He was also a former member of Catholic Order of Forester. Melvin was an accomplished candlepin bowler with the Van Buren Bowling League, one of the best, and won many awards and tournaments. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Arlene (St. Pierre) Madore of Van Buren; two children, Peter Madore and wife, Stacey, and Lynn McBee and husband, Danny, both of Van Buren; brother, Daniel Madore of Van Buren; two sisters, Omerine Cyr of Carmel and Jeannine Poitras of Bristol, Conn.; grandchildren, Chandler Madore and Monique Carver; and great-grandchildren, Marissa and Marlee Carver.  FARMINGDALE - William R. Malloy, former state commissioner of labor, died Friday, May 17, 2013. He was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Caribou. Survivors include son, W. Gregory Malloy and Marcia Jolicoeur of Chelsea; daughter, Michelle Malloy Johnson and James Wentworth of Farmingdale; granddaughter, Amy Malloy and husband, Chance Griffeth, of Brunswick; granddaughters, Kyrie and Kayla Johnson of Farmingdale; grandson, Sgt. Daniel W. Malloy, U.S. Army, great-grandsons, Tyler Malloy and Cameron Griffeth of Brunswick; daughter-in-law, Jean Marie Malloy of Westbrook; stepgrandchildren, Eric Russell of Fort Kent, Karen Russell Westbrook and Shawna Wells of Hallowell; and special family friend, Elaine Lacroix. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Bibiana T. Malloy; and son, Kirkwood L. Malloy. William attended schools in Caribou and graduated from Caribou High School. In 1952, he graduated from Madawaska Training School, now University of Maine at Fort Kent. He attended the University of Maine, University of Princeton and American Management Institute. In his years with the labor department he held various positions throughout his 27-year career, and served on many national, regional and statewide committees. He was a former chairperson of the Governor's Special Handicapped Committee. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of American Veterans Post No. 18, American Legion Post No. 0178, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 964 Augusta Elks. William was a life member of Knights of Columbus, third and fourth degree, a past faithful navigator of Fourth Degree Assembly 348, past grand knight third degree of Canabas Council 1299. A former district deputy, William served on many State Council committees and was a former master of Third Degree Team. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid outdoor person, never getting in enough fishing or hunting. He was a life member of S.A.M. The New England Patriots were another favorite, either on television or at Foxboro, Mass., with the family. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, with the rosary being recited 7 p.m. by KofC Gardiner Council No. 1299, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23.  CARIBOU - Beatrice C. McDougal, 85, wife of the late George McDougal, went to be with her Lord May 19, 2013, following a brave battle against dementia. She was born July 18, 1927, in Caribou, daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Page) Levasseur. Mrs. McDougal was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of Lister Knowlton Post 9389 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Henry B. Pratt Post 15, American Legion Ladies Axillaries. She is survived by her children, Charles McDougal of Connecticut, Mary "Jaine" McDougal of New Hampshire, George McDougal and wife, Vadea, of Idaho, Linda McLaughlin and husband, Danny, of Caribou and Galen McDougal and wife, Melody, of Woodland; daughter-in-law, Louise McDougal of Caribou; two sons-in-law; Thomas Doak of Connecticut and Gerald Byram of Florida; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  ELLSWORTH - John Edward McHugh Jr., 70, died May 19, 2013 at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1943, in Boston, the son of John E. and Elizabeth M. (Conran) McHugh Sr. Ed graduated from Boston College High School, class of 1960 and attended Boston College, St. Anselm's College and Northeastern University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged in 1971. Ed began his career as a flight instructor and charter pilot for Wiggins Airways in Norwood, Mass. He then entered the banking industry specializing in aircraft financing and commercial lending. He worked for Boston Capital beginning in 1994, and for the past 15 years, as the senior underwriter. He married Christine Anderson in 1997 and they moved to Maine together. He is survived by his daughter, Cara M. McHugh Avila and husband, Craig; grandson, Ryan Avila, all of Pascoag, R.I.; brothers, Richard and wife, Susan, of Pembroke, Mass., Ronald and wife, Janice, of Florida, Stephen and wife, Joanne, of Bridgewater, Mass.; sisters, Donna Tilley and husband, Robert, of York, Betty Jane Colligan and partner, Keith Rabine, of Sandwich, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.  CHERRYFIELD - Gloria Jane McKenney, 79, a longtime resident of Washington County, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013. Gloria was born March 8, 1934, in Columbia, to Charles Willard and Lydia Ann (Sinclair) Carter. At eight months of age, her mother passed away and she moved to live with her aunt, Gladys Carter Jellison, in Franklin. When she turned seven years old, Gloria moved back to Washington County and graduated from high school at Stueben, in 1951. Shortly after graduation, Gloria met her future husband, Roland H. McKenney, whom she married at Harrington Methodist Parsonage Feb. 23, 1952. Gloria and Roland created their family together and in the fall of 1960 moved to Massachusetts to pursue work opportunities. As years passed family gathers at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas became traditions looked forward to. Also, ice skating activities, Sunday rides and vacation trips back to Maine became part of building their family relationship. In her free time, Gloria looked forward to spending time with friends playing cards and visiting. She also enjoyed country music and any kind of religious hymn. When her health allowed, Gloria looked forward to and enjoyed 'blueberrying." As her battle with multiple sclerosis took its toll on her body, she would keep her mind sharp with word searches, puzzles and knitting. For more than 35 years Gloria combated her disease with toughness and resilience. She will be remembered by her family for her great love and caring. She is survived by her daughters, Rise McKenney and partner, David, Sheila Batson and Stephanie Norton of Addison; grandchildren, Brian Marston of Harrington, Brad Marston and fiancee, Autumn, of Addison, Richard Norton III and partner, Jessica, of Jonesport, Darcy Norton and partner, George of New Hampshire, Brandon Beal of Addison, Gregory Batson and wife, Erica, of Columbia and Andrew Batson of Cape Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jaxson, Cassidy, Samantha, Zander, Trenity, Daemon and Logan; sisters, Hilda Nichols of Cherryfield and Kathleen Stillwell of Ellsworth; and many nieces and nephews. Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Lydia; husband, Roland; mother-in-law, Clara; father-in-law, Bertie; and brothers and sisters, Harold, Albert, Willard, Roland, Clarence, Virginia and Elizabeth.
