BANGOR - Thomas Belleau, 83, died March 28, 2014, at a nursing facility after a brief illness. He was born May 31, 1930, in Lewiston, the son of Romeo J. and Margaret Belleau.

After graduating from Sanford High School, Tom obtained a bachelor's degree from Indiana University and a medical degree in psychiatry from Boston University, then interned at Boston Children's Hospital. Interspersed in these years, he worked as a cook at The Colony Hotel both in Kennebunkport and in Delray Beach, Fla. He also served with the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean War.

Tom spent the majority of his career as a psychiatrist working for The Community Health and Counseling Services in Bangor. He was dedicated to helping those with mental illness, and upon his retirement received countless gestures of thanks for his caring attention. During summer weekends he loved driving down to his family's camp in Shapleigh, where he would look forward to Sunday morning breakfasts with his family and relatives. He was a reserved, gentle man who enjoyed sitting by the lake and telling jokes with his sisters and their husbands.

Two sisters, Betty Asarian and Jane Lanier, predeceased Tom, in addition to his parents. Surviving are his sisters, Beverley Forest of Dover, N.H., and Linda Lord and husband, Malcolm Lord; sons, Peter Belleau of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael Belleau and wife, Molly Sneden, of Portland, Alan Belleau and wife, Lupe Belleau; his daughter, Susannah Owen and husband, Jeff Owen; five grandchildren, Max Belleau, Milo Belleau, Alex Belleau, Katie Owen, and Tommy Owen; and many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to The Maine Veterans' Home of Bangor for their care and attention to Tom during his years there. He was a man who preferred solitude, but he appreciated the staff's kindness. We also want to thank Beacon Hospice for their help.
