BANGOR - Russell E. "Gene" Schaff, II, 70, died June 30, 2014 at Togus with his family by his side after a lengthy illness. He was born Sept 21, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Russell E. and Ann M. (Eaton) Schaff.

Gene grew up and attended high school in Maryland and enlisted in the US Air Force in 1961. He served 26 years retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1987. Gene served as First Sergeant for OMS at Loring AFB and was a Vietnam Veteran and received many medals and honors for his service. He earned a bachelor's degree from Husson College in 1993. Gene was a member and Past Master of the Limestone Lodge #214 and was a member of the Anah Temple. He was also a Royal Arch Mason, Garfield Chapter #48, Caribou, St. Alderman Commandery and the Knights Templar #17. Gene was also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Bangor.

Gene was predeceased by his wife, Janette Schaff . He is survived by his children, Gene Schaff and his wife, Faith Erhardt of Orono and Denise Reed and her fiancé, Ernie Coleman of Bangor; stepdaughter, Dawn Libby and her husband, Jack Libby; stepsons, Douglass Reed and his wife, Charlotte and Donald Reed; a brother, Douglas Schaff and his wife, Peggy of Maryland; grandchildren, Noah, Eli, Ryan, Melissa, Travis, Anmarie, Amber, Erin, Tina, Amanda; several great grandchildren. Gene's family gratefully thanks the nurses and staff from Togus that took care of him with love and dignity.

A graveside service and burial with military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
