DIXMONT - Richard "Rich" Hachey, 84, passed away peacefully Aug. 25, 2013, at his Dixmont home surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 13, 1929, in Old Town.

He graduated from Orono High School in 1948. He joined the United States Marines and served for 25 years, retiring in 1971 as a Master Sergeant. His service to his country included two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. His achievements in the Marines included the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was part of the 1st Infantry Division 5th Infantry 1st Battalion Weapons and also served as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island from 1957 to 1959.
He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Cecelia Hachey; and his sisters, Margaret Norbom and Eleanor Veazie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sylvia Hachey (Boudreau) of Dixmont; two sons, Wayne Hachey of Carmel and companion, Kim Preble, and Rick Hachey Jr. of Orono and wife, Nancie White; four daughters, Debra Evirs, Diane Ruscoe and Theresa Kelleher all of Plymouth, Mass., and Paula Pelletier of Orrington; ten grandchildren, Todd Evirs, John MacDonald, Kali McDowell, Roderick Russell, Andrea Gabbett, Gregory McDowell, Meagan Hachey, Patrick Reardon, David Hachey, Joel Pelletier and Ryan Pelletier; and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Evirs, Asa Evirs, and Violette MacDonald; and special niece, Vicki Karlsson.
He was a member of the Chapter of Korean War Veterans and enjoyed participating in the Veteran Day parades. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing and working outdoors.
A heartfelt thank you to Kim Preble and Eastern Maine Hospice for taking care of him in his last days.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment with military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
