HEIDELBERG, GERMANY - Professor Dr. Renate Delphendahl passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Heidelberg, Germany, after a brief illness. Her daughter Audrey Delphendahl was at her side.

Professor Delphendahl was a graduate of Michigan State University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959; the University of Maine, Orono, where she received a Master of Arts degree in 1967; and the University of Zurich, where she received her doctorate in 1975. She was a professor emerita of German at the University of Maine and retired from the university in the late 1990s. Her husband, Johannes Delphendahl, who predeceased her in 2003, was also a professor at the University of Maine for many years. She was one of the first women full professors at the University of Maine and was active in the Honors College. In addition to being an inspirational teacher, she was a distinguished scholar and published many articles in professional journals. She was well-known in her fields of German literature and literary theory, and was a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. Professor Delphendahl relocated to Heidelberg, Germany, near the town of Schwetzingen, where she was born, in 2004.

She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Delphendahl and son-in-law, Paul Fillmore, of Dreieich-Buchschlag, Germany; grandchildren, Andrew Fillmore - a student at the European Media and Business Academy, Berlin, Elisabeth Fillmore - a student at McGill University, Montreal, and Katerina Fillmore - a student at the European School, Frankfurt, Germany; as well as her sister, Gerlinde and brother-in-law, Dieter Konrad, of Schwetzingen, Germany.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 8, at the Bergfriedhof, Heidelberg, Germany, where Professor Delphendahl's ashes were interred along with those of her husband. Memorial donations may be made to the Renate and Johannes Delphendahl Scholarship Fund.
