ELLSWORTH - John Edward McHugh Jr., 70, died May 19, 2013 at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1943, in Boston, the son of John E. and Elizabeth M. (Conran) McHugh Sr.

Ed graduated from Boston College High School, class of 1960 and attended Boston College, St. Anselm's College and Northeastern University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged in 1971. Ed began his career as a flight instructor and charter pilot for Wiggins Airways in Norwood, Mass. He then entered the banking industry specializing in aircraft financing and commercial lending. He worked for Boston Capital beginning in 1994, and for the past 15 years, as the senior underwriter. He married Christine Anderson in 1997 and they moved to Maine together.
He is survived by his daughter, Cara M. McHugh Avila and husband, Craig; grandson, Ryan Avila, all of Pascoag, R.I.; brothers, Richard and wife, Susan, of Pembroke, Mass., Ronald and wife, Janice, of Florida, Stephen and wife, Joanne, of Bridgewater, Mass.; sisters, Donna Tilley and husband, Robert, of York, Betty Jane Colligan and partner, Keith Rabine, of Sandwich, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife, Christine A. McHugh, June 28, 2011; a sister, Paula Page.
Calling hours will be held 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Riverside Cemetery, Hancock, with Rev Sara H. Huisjen officiating.
