She was born in Lee on Feb. 2, 1938, the daughter of Howard and Phyllis Mallett, and graduated from Lee Academy in 1956. She earned her degree in Education from UMaine in 1960. While at UMaine, she was an active member of the University Singers and the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She became a teacher and taught for over 37 years. Her career took her to Connecticut, New Jersey, U.S. Army bases in Germany, Washington, D.C., and then eventually back to her beloved Maine. While on-base in Germany, Gail met her husband Roger Rae; they married in 1965, and she had her only son, Christopher in 1976. The family moved to Searsport, while Gail taught Special Education at Bucksport High School for over 10 years. In 1978, Roger passed away, and she raised Christopher as a single mom. In 1983, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and survived without any further reoccurrences. Gail moved back to her hometown of Lee in 1986, where she taught Special Education at Lee Academy, while also owning and operating Dunloggin' Bed & Breakfast on Silver Lake for 15 years. She was very driven and passionate in her community interests, and wove herself into the fabric of numerous organizations including, but not limited to, the Lee Historical Society, Lee Academy Board of Trustees, Maine Highlands Guild, Maine Tourism Association, American Red Cross, American Legion Auxiliary, UMaine Senior Alumni Association, Lincoln Lakes Chamber of Commerce, and was also critical in fundraising for the Lincoln Lakes Regional Dialysis Center. She was also an avid fan of Lee Academy basketball and UMaine hockey.
Gail is survived by her son, Christopher Rae and daughter-in-law, Cori Calvert of San Diego; and stepson, Randall Rae and his wife, Camille, and their children, Randall Jr. and Ryen of Clarksville, Tenn. She is surrounded by a large and loving family which includes her brother, Gary Mallett and his children, Philip Mallett, Jenny Mallett Thompson, and Andrew Mallett and their families, and the extended Mallett and Speed families throughout New England, including her best friends, Nancy Dysart, Sandie Page and Barbara Potts.
